How to explain a career gap in a Hong Kong job interview
Explain the gap honestly and briefly, then return to the skills you offer.
Check your timeline
Check the months for work, study and other experience so your CV dates are accurate and consistent. You can briefly mention caring responsibilities, a career change, study or another reason without sharing private details you prefer to keep private.
Prepare a short answer
Give the context in a sentence or two, then explain your readiness to return and why the role fits. For example: “I took time to manage family responsibilities, which are now settled. During that time I practised data analysis and completed a personal project.” Use only details that are true.
Connect to the role
Prepare a concrete example of how you have used a relevant skill and what you can contribute. If you did not study during the gap, discuss earlier work and your plan to learn on the job.
