How to answer “Why are you leaving your job?”

Explain the reason honestly and connect it to the role you want.

Identify your reason

Think about the work, growth or arrangement you want to change. Separate facts you can share from private details you prefer to keep private. Be accurate without criticising former colleagues or employers.

Connect to the opportunity

For example: “I would like more opportunities to work on product analysis, which is why this role interests me.” If you were laid off, briefly explain the context and then discuss relevant experience.

Prepare for follow-up

An interviewer may ask what you want in your next role. Prepare a concrete example of the responsibilities or learning you value, and keep your account consistent with your CV timeline.
