Data analyst jobs in Hong Kong: preparing your CV and portfolio

Show how you work with data and communicate an analysis.

Understand the analytical work

Data analyst roles can focus on reporting, business analysis, experiments or data engineering. Read the job description for the main tools, collaborators and whether you will define metrics; do not infer the work from the title alone.

Show your reasoning with a project

Choose work you can share publicly and explain the question, data source, cleaning, analysis and recommendation. State data limitations and metric definitions. Avoid unauthorised company or personal data and be ready to explain your method.

Align your CV and interview

List query, statistics or visualisation tools you have actually used and explain the context rather than just listing names. Practise explaining results to a non-technical colleague and prepare for questions about data quality and alternative explanations.

Portfolio exercise: late deliveries

Illustrative practice: create a synthetic orders table and define “late” as actual delivery after the promised date. Group by promised delivery week and divide late orders by orders with both dates present; inspect and report orders with missing dates separately. Use SQL to calculate the rate and chart the trend. State that the data is simulated and cannot establish causes; list hypotheses to investigate. Do not present practice as employer results.
