Start with official vacancies
Search the government vacancy enquiry system by job and recruiting department. Civil service and non-civil-service contract posts have different appointment arrangements, so read each advertisement carefully.
Check residence and entry requirements
The Civil Service Bureau states that civil servants appointed on or after 1 July 1997 must be Hong Kong Special Administrative Region permanent residents, subject to exceptions under Articles 99 and 101 of the Basic Law. Individual posts may have other status or nationality requirements; check the advertisement for each non-civil-service contract post too. Review academic, language, professional and examination requirements and the closing time. If you hold overseas qualifications, prepare the evidence requested by the recruiting department.
Use the specified application channel
Submit personal information only through the channels in the advertisement and allow enough time to complete your application. Prepare real examples of teamwork, problem solving and public service for interviews.
How to find civil-service and non-civil-service vacancies
The government vacancies system lists civil-service and non-civil-service positions separately. Open the actual notice to check residency, qualifications, language, examinations, application method and deadline. Non-civil-service contract appointments have different arrangements; check each position rather than assuming civil-service rules apply.
