How to read a Hong Kong job description
Interpret responsibilities, qualifications, language and salary before applying.
Separate duties from requirements
Start with the work you would do each day. Sort education, experience, skills and languages into required and preferred criteria. If the distinction is unclear, ask during the application or interview instead of assuming every preference is mandatory.
Identify missing information
Record the employer, location, hours, contract type and salary range. Do not assume missing details: ask whether a quoted monthly salary includes allowances or bonuses. Check the date and original listing.
Decide what to do next
Compare the most important tasks with evidence you can offer. For each gap, consider relevant experience and learning. Use truthful examples in your application and keep questions for the interview.
How do I distinguish essential from preferred job requirements?
Mark the qualifications the original advertisement explicitly makes essential, and separate terms such as preferred or advantageous. If education, residency, licensing or language is not stated, treat it as unknown and ask the recruiter; absence from a summary does not establish that no requirement exists. Check the original notice especially carefully for government and regulated roles.
