Changing careers in Hong Kong: show your transferable skills

Compare target roles and identify the experience you can carry across.

Choose a specific direction

Pick one or two target roles and read several job descriptions. List recurring tasks and requirements. Separate skills you already have from those you can practise soon and those requiring formal qualifications or longer study.

Translate your experience

Describe previous work in terms the new employer will understand. For example, connect clarifying customer complaints, coordinating across teams and following through to responsibilities in customer success or operations. Keep your original titles and facts accurate.

Test the direction with a project

Choose a small project resembling the target role, document the problem, your approach and the result, and seek specific feedback from practitioners. Before paying for training, check its content, cost and relevance. The Employees Retraining Board publishes course information.
