Understand registration
The Education Bureau states that people teaching in schools generally need to be registered or permitted teachers under the Education Ordinance. Private schools offering non-formal curricula may have exemptions if they meet specified conditions; check the details with the Bureau. A person with recognised teacher qualifications may apply for registered teacher status using Form 8, subject to eligibility. A school applies for a permitted teacher, whose permission is limited to specified schools and subjects; a new school must apply again. Non-permanent residents should also check the required valid immigration evidence.
Review the vacancy
Check subjects, year groups, languages and working hours. Prepare academic and teaching qualification evidence requested by the school and allow time for any required certification.
Prepare a teaching example
Explain a lesson or teaching plan, its learning objective, how you support different abilities and how you assess understanding. Protect student privacy when sharing materials.
