Choosing job references for a Hong Kong application
Ask permission, choose people who know your work and agree when they can be contacted.
Ask first
Choose people who can discuss your work specifically, such as a former manager or project colleague. Ask permission, confirm their title and contact details, and explain the role you are applying for.
Give useful context
Share the job description and relevant experience, allowing the referee to give their own honest assessment. Graduates can consider an internship supervisor or a tutor familiar with their project work, subject to the employer’s requirements.
Protect your current employment
If you do not want your current employer contacted early, explain when references may be approached and discuss alternatives with the recruiter. Obtain consent before sharing anyone’s details.
