Protecting personal data when applying for jobs in Hong Kong
Check who receives your CV and how your information will be used.
Identify the recruiter
Check the employer or recruitment agency named in the advertisement and the contact method for enquiries. If an ad requests CVs or identity details without identifying the recruiter, verify through the platform or another reliable channel before submitting.
Share information at the right stage
Start with education, experience and contact details relevant to your application. Under the Privacy Commissioner’s human-resource code, an employer generally should not collect a copy of a Hong Kong identity card during recruitment until the applicant has accepted an offer; identity card numbers have separate, strict collection conditions. Do not post identity documents publicly or provide bank details prematurely. Verify the recipient, purpose and need before sharing necessary information securely.
Keep track of submissions
Record when and to whom you submitted your CV. Review the platform or employer’s privacy notice for data use and contact details. If information was misdirected or may have leaked, contact the recipient promptly; contact your bank promptly if banking information is involved.
