Hong Kong employment background checks: what to clarify
Understand the scope, consent and secure handling of your information.
Clarify the scope
Ask the employer or screening provider what information will be checked, why, who receives it and how the process works. Verify the contact and channel, and read the privacy notice.
Check accuracy
Review employment dates, titles and education and prepare documents that can be verified. If your CV contains an error, explain and correct it early; never alter or fabricate evidence.
Agree on contact timing
If checks involve referees or your current employer, agree with the recruiter when contact may occur and ask referees before sharing their details. The Privacy Commissioner says an employer should obtain the employee’s or former employee’s voluntary express consent before providing an employment reference to another employer, preferably in writing. Ask why unclear information is required and how to transfer it securely.
