Hong Kong part-time jobs: what to check before accepting

Clarify scheduling, pay, notice and applicable employment protections.

Check hours and pay

Ask about expected weekly hours, shift notice, hourly or other pay calculation, and payday. Clarify any transport, meal or uniform arrangements or charges. Keep your schedules, hours and wage records.

Review the terms

Confirm the workplace, duties, probation and notice arrangements for both sides. If verbal terms differ from the written document, ask the employer to clarify before signing. Keep the contract and later changes.

Check applicable protections

Part-time employees may meet the continuous-contract requirement. From 18 January 2026, this requires at least four weeks of continuous employment with the same employer and a weekly hours threshold: at least 17 hours each week; if a week falls below 17 hours, it can still count when that week and the three immediately preceding weeks total at least 68 hours. The four-week, 68-hour rule cannot be used in the first three weeks of a new employment. Individual leave and allowance benefits have additional eligibility conditions. Keep records of your hours and check your circumstances against Labour Department guidance.

How do I compare part-time and full-time jobs in Hong Kong?

Compare weekly hours, roster stability, pay calculation, location and notice. Part-time status alone does not remove statutory protections: check the continuous-contract test and the separate conditions for each benefit against your employment and the Labour Department’s current rules. Ask the employer about terms missing from the listing before accepting.
