How to negotiate a Hong Kong job offer
Compare the whole offer and explain your salary expectations with evidence.
Set a range
Research comparable salaries by role, seniority and location. Check when the information was collected and whether bonuses are included. Consider your financial needs, relevant skills and market evidence to establish a target range and minimum acceptable terms.
Compare the complete package
Ask about base salary, guaranteed and discretionary bonuses, allowances, leave, medical benefits, hours and flexible arrangements. Separate one-off payments from recurring compensation and clarify the conditions attached to bonuses.
Make an evidence-based request
Express your interest in the role, then explain your expectations using experience or achievements you can substantiate. If salary is fixed, ask about responsibilities, training or a review timetable. Confirm important terms in writing before accepting.
Example: ask about the pay range
Example: “I am interested in the role. Given its client and project responsibilities, could you share the salary range and which elements are fixed or variable?” If asked for expectations first, suggest a range based on your real experience and needs, and ask about benefits. Do not invent a competing offer.
