Payday and wage protection in Hong Kong
Check pay periods, wage components and what to do about discrepancies.
Confirm pay and payday
Before starting, check how basic wages, allowances, commissions and overtime are calculated. Ask about the wage period and payday, and keep your written contract and later changes.
Compare payslips with records
Keep a record of actual hours, approved overtime and earnings, then compare your bank deposit with your payslip. Ask your employer about discrepancies and retain the correspondence.
Due dates and unpaid wages
The Labour Department states that wages should be paid when due and no later than seven days after the wage period ends. If wages are unpaid or deducted, review the ordinance and ask the department about remedies that apply to your case.
