Check your own eligibility
Eligible non-local and GBA campus graduates who apply for IANG within six months of the date on their graduation certificate do not need a job offer at application. Those applying after six months need an offer that meets Immigration Department requirements for job level and pay. Check the current official guidance for other eligibility restrictions and your own conditions of stay.
Prepare for employer questions
Be ready to explain your work eligibility and period of stay clearly, and prepare supporting documents for the appropriate stage. Avoid placing identity or visa numbers on a public CV; verify the recruiter and use a secure channel for sensitive documents.
Plan ahead
Check your existing conditions before applying and before starting work, and allow time to review extension requirements. For questions about your specific situation, contact the Immigration Department or a qualified professional.
Do I need a job offer to apply for IANG?
Not always. According to the Immigration Department, eligible non-local or GBA campus graduates applying within six months of the date on their graduation certificate are recent graduates and do not need an offer at application. Non-recent graduates applying after six months need an offer at a graduate-level position with market-level remuneration. Qualification, nationality and other eligibility conditions still apply.
When should I renew IANG, and do I need a job?
The Immigration Department says entrants are normally granted an initial 24-month stay. Apply for an extension as early as possible within the three months before your limit expires, and at least six weeks before expiry. Renewal normally requires a graduate-level employment offer with market-level remuneration; people who have established or joined a business in Hong Kong can provide business evidence as specified. Unless the Director of Immigration grants exceptional approval, you must leave before your permitted stay expires even if your extension application is still being processed. Check the official requirements and your own permission of stay.
